Run, Spot, Run -- to Vacation Fun!
So you want to get away, but the intensity of the separation anxiety when parted from that cuddly, four-legged furball, reaches epic, carpet-shredding levels?
It’s a common dilemma (and I’m assuming here, of course, the carpet chewing is about them, not you).
Thankfully, there are many options for the well-heeled, and well-pawed, as you take to the road for the weekend, or longer, getaways. There are several major chains that have pet-friendly policies in place, with amenities for you and specialties for your pet.
The top three according to my searches are the Klimptons, Lowes and W Hotels, which score particularly high in the "pet-pampering" department.
The following are some of the best options in the State of California, with hundreds across the country as well.
LOEWS CORONADO BAY RESORT
4000 Coronado Bay Road
Coronado, CA 92118
All Loews hotels have an established "We Love Pets" program, but the Coronado location takes it to another level, with gourmet room service menus and food prepared by their award-winning chef, specialized bedding, leashes, collars, litter boxes (and litter), pooper scoopers, pet placemats, water bowls, treats, rawhide bones, catnip and scratch poles and a pet-walking and sitting service.
Loews Coronado Bay also offers the most creative pet-cation of all that I surveyed; they offer an organized surfing lesson for your dog, (sorry pussums) complete with doggy board shorts or a bandanna and a surf ’n’ turf meal. (If your dog turns out to be totally rad at the sport, you can sign him up for their annual dog-surfing competition in June). Totally tubular, dude!
509 9th Avenue
San Diego, CA 92101
The Hotel Indigo is one of the pet-friendliest places on earth, and the location is perfect for your San Diego adventure. Urban, trendy and über modern, this is the spot for your oh-so-chic pet. Best yet, the 9th floor rooftop bar is a stunning place to hang out with your companions, it even has a grassy canine bathroom for your pet that is... complete with bags.
SUNSET TOWER HOTEL
8358 Sunset Boulevard
West Hollywood, CA 90069
I love old classic hotels. This sleek and stylish one lands you in the heart of West Hollywood and is part of the stunning, historic Art Deco movement present all over the city. If you are planning to visit Tinseltown, this is the swankiest place to hang your leash.
Located on the famed Sunset Strip, and commanding some of the best views of L.A., the elegant hotel is very pet-friendly and pampers your "BPFs" with mini-Sunset Tower beds, bowls and treats. Conveniently adjoining the hotel is William S. Hart Park, a happy "leash-free" haven for dogs to run around, meet and greet and make connections... and be discovered, perhaps?
THE STANDARD DOWNTOWN L.A.
550 South Flower at Sixth Street
Los Angeles, CA 90071
I love this hotel. It’s funky, cool and a whole lot of edgy. They allow up to three cats or dogs (up to 50 lbs.) and all of their rooms are pet available. Oh, and the rooftop bar and pool are stunning and super cool, with DJs most every night and "beautiful people" everywhere -- furry fashionistas in tow!
580 Lommel Road
Calistoga, CA 94515
707 254 2800
Reservations: 855 942 4220
I had to fit this one in because it has all of my favorite things: Wine and boundless nature -- and wine, plus a place for my furry friend -- non-humanoid or other, as the case may be.
One of the luxury Auberge resorts, this is probably the most dog friendly hotel in California wine country. Your pampered pooch abode is fitted with special beds, a newsletter, a gourmet room service menu, a wine bottle filled with treats to set the mood, with a list of pet-friendly wineries so you and Fido can indulge.
The boutique resort has just 48 lavish rooms on more than 150-acres in a private canyon with direct access to the great outdoors, a large relaxing spa and the best of wine country fine dining on site.
950 Mason Street
San Francisco, CA, 94108
Another classic beauty, this world-renowned hotel is perched atop Nob Hill and has some of the most commanding views of the city available. Built in 1907, the hotel’s luxury accommodations combine classic ambience with modern amenities and is a part of San Francisco¹s illustrious history.
Humans can enjoy selections from their own mini bar, such as Ghirardelli Chocolates and a bottle of beer, but Fido’s extensive treats include cable car-decorated cookies, organic peanut-brittle treats, complete with a ceramic bowl, a blanket, a rope toy, an aromatic candle to eliminate odors, and a delightful spritzer infused with lemongrass, peppermint and cloves for their dog-gone beds.
495 Jefferson Street
San Francisco, CA, 94109
Very pet-friendly: There are no fees, weight restrictions, or limits on the
number of pets per room. Pet amenities including beds, leashes, bowls and
treats. Located in historic Fisherman’s Wharf, with an animal-friendly park
just ten steps away from the hotel’s front door
Carmel / Monterey
CARMEL VALLEY RANCH
1 Old Ranch Road
Carmel, CA, 93923
Okay, this is a favorite for me, and I have recommended this gorgeous complex on numerous occasions. 139 elegantly appointed guest suites, each with cathedral ceilings, fireplaces, limestone baths and private decks, with a true "ranch style" welcome for your pets. A doggy bed, water bowls, and other pet amenities galore. Nestled in the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, the resort is surrounded by 400 acres of secluded woodland and landscaped gardens with everything from beekeeping to yoga available for you, and pet-inclusive options like outdoor dining at their restaurants and nightly campfires with s’mores.
San Carlos Street At 5th Avenue
Carmel, CA, 93921
The lodge allows pets of any size for a nominal fee. Monterey pines dot the property with cool ocean breezes tempering the 38 cozy guest rooms, just two blocks from Ocean Avenue and a short stroll to animal paradise: Carmel Beach.
FESS PARKER’S DOUBLETREE BY HILTON RESORT HOTEL
633 East Cabrillo Boulevard
Santa Barbara, CA 93103
This mission-style Santa Barbara doggie-paradise is situated on 24 beautiful beach-front acres, with miles of landscaped walking paths along the waterfront and parks. Want to go for a swim? Take your dogs with you.
There are dog-friendly beaches a short drive away, off-leash parks as well as hiking trails in the local mountains. And let me tell you, the amenities are amazing: A doggy welcome bag when you check in with treats, toys, a pooper-scooper, literature for off-site places to eat, an in-house doggy menu, and they can dine with you at the hotel’s patio restaurants!
BEACH HOUSE INN

Santa Barbara, CA 93101
Tastefully decorated rooms, charming studios, and spacious apartments with
kitchens all just a couple blocks from the beach. You and your Honey
Boo-Pooch will feel welcome and well cared for.
