Reno 911! The Complete Sixth Season
If you’ve never watched Reno:911, Comedy Central’s smash hit faux-"Cops" styled show (plus their film Reno:911 Miami, then season six is not your ideal starting point.
If you’re a devotee of Lt. Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon - a lieutenant who only wears short-shorts and insists he’s not gay), Dep. Trudie Wiegel (Kerri Kinney-Silver, possibly the most offensive female character in TV history), Dep. Jones (Cedric Yarborough), Dep. Williams (Niecy Nash), and Dep. Junior (Ben Garrett) then season six will slightly confuse you, as Dep. Clementine Johnson (Wendy Mclendon-Covey) and Dep, Garcia (Carlos Alazraqui), and Dep. Kimball (Mary Birdsong) have all been killed off in Season 5’s finale, leaving Detective Sergeant Jack Declan (Ian Roberts) and Dep. Frank Rizzo (Joe LaTruglio) to replace them.
Whether Comedy Central wanted to dump some contracts or re-energize the show, it only works to mixed results. it’s not on par with Roseanne replacing Becky, then reinserting the original, but it does change the complexion of the show.
Plus the writers seem to be slowing down a bit, opting for much more storyline and broader, more outrageous gags in season six, but those are usually inevitabilities.
There still great cameos (Patton Oswalt, Nick Swardson’s super-gay Terry character, Scott Thompson, etc.) but the show’s jokes seem more forced than before (their station is mostly asbestos so they have to hold their briefings at a seafood restaurant, Dangle performs a dinner murder-mystery that ends up being 2 episodes long, etc.
Plus newcomer Roberts (from Upright Citizen’s Brigade) is not overwhelmingly funny. The sad thing is that even at it’s worst, Reno:911 is still one of the funniest shows on TV.
As long as Lennon, Kinney-Silver, and Garrett are performing together, the show can’t not be funny.
