Based on the book trilogy of the same name, Lark Rise to Candleford is a poignant glimpse into life in a small English hamlet at the end of the 19th century. The television series opens as a young woman named Laura (Olivia Hallinan) moves from the quaint town of Lark Rise (in the Oxfordshire countryside) to a market town called Candleford. Emotional, humorous, and clever: This series colorfully paints the lives of people in a bygone era, contrasting between traditional Lark Rise and a bustling commercial town that points to a much different future. Lark Rise to Candleford is shown through Laura’s eyes as she’s torn between her childhood home and the allure of an exciting new life in a bigger city. Along the way we get to know some colorful characters portrayed by actors who truly make this show special - the familiar BBC faces of Dawn French (Absolutely Fabulous, French and Saunders) Julia Sawalha (Ab Fab),

By no means a 19th century version of Desperate Housewives, Lark Rise to Candleford is slow-moving at times, but certainly a joy to watch.
