Mi Plan
When you hear that Nelly Furtado has a Spanish language album, you may be expecting a Spanish version of hot booty-shaking anthems like "Promiscuous Girl" and "Maneater." Instead, you get a blend of Furtado’s original ballad style songs (think "I’m Like a Bird" and "Turn off the Light") with interesting euro-pop and Spanish guitars. You also get Ms. Furtado speaking espanol.
Furtado does a decent job at singing in Spanish. Some songs sound a little reminiscent of a high school Spanish class but many capture the soul and energy of a song on Barcelona radio. "Bajo Otra Luz" and "Mar" are the perfect blend of the irreverent sexy vibe of Furtado’s previous album "Loose" with a blend of Spanish flair and her slow ballad roots.
Some songs like "Como Lluvia" and the titular "Mi Plan" might be a little slower than you are used to if you are a big fan of songs like "Promiscuous Girl" and "Get it Right." There are heavy Spanish influences especially evident in the song "Vacacion" and "Sufficiente Tiempo." They sound fitting on Barcelona radio or a Telemundo novella.
The album boasts appearances by Julieta Venegas, La Mala Rodriguez, Alejandro Fernandez, and even Josh Groban.
The album does skew more towards slow ballads. There aren’t many dance hits on the album and it is more fitting of the "Whoa, Nelly" era Nelly Furtado. This album is a testament to Furtado’s versatility but it does abandon some of the genius of her prior album "Loose."
