American Horror Story
Any show featuring a hot man in a rubber suit has got to be a winner.
"American Horror Story: The Complete First Season" on Blu-ray offers the obvious horror that its title suggests, along with some dark humor and a dash of psychosexual intrigue.
The 12 episode season starts off with a bang, as the Harmon’s (Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton) move from Boston to LA to start life anew. They move into a sprawling home, unaware that the previous inhabitants are now ghosts who haunt their home. The creepy and twisting storyline gets more complex as the season progresses, ending with a 2-story arc that wraps up this mini-series.
Show creator Ryan Murphy knows a thing or two about off-the-wall shows: the man who brought us "Nip/Tuck" and "Glee" does an audio commentary on the pilot episode. Recently out actor Zachary Quinto appears in 5 episodes as one half of a gay couple that was murdered in the house...the frank dialogue about gay life is one of "American Horror Story’s" highlights.
The cast is stellar for a TV series, especially with a standout performance from Jessica Lange in an award winning role. Her un-PC character is complex, rich with a sordid history, and Lange gets to deliver such humdinger lines as "what do we do about getting rid of the gays of the house?" McDermott and Britton play off each other well as the couple in turmoil, and the youngsters in the cast (Taissa Farmiga and Evan Peters) are pros as well.
