Pina
Director Wim Wenders’ exquisite dance documentary "Pina" gets a beautiful Criterion treatment, complete with 2D and 3D versions of the film. Specifically shot in 3D to add dimension and depth to the dance performances, this is probably one of the truest reasons for the use of 3D since its inception. That’s not to say "Pina" can’t be enjoyed in regular 2D, either.
More of a celebration of choreographer Pina Bausch than a documentary on her life, the film offers small glimpses into her persona, in addition to some previously filmed dance sequences with her. But mostly it’s a gripping showcase of her work. Shot in various locations around Germany, there are 19 dances in total giving audiences a fascinating overview of her talent and style. Most of the featured dancers have worked with Pina for many years, so this project was a true labor of love. Shot in Hi-Def, the film is stunning to watch and even for dance novices, it’s impossible not to appreciate. The Criterion Special Features only add to the experience and is well worth the purchase price for those interested in dance.
