Sherry Vine :: Carol Burnett revisited, this time in drag
Sherry Vine is one hilariously entertaining performer. She not only looks flawless and fun but also performs and creates new hysterical lyrics with spot-on parodies of the likes of Lady Gaga and Madonna.
All these talents and more come in to play for her new half-hour show called "She’s Living for This" on the here! TV network. The premise for the show is a modern spin on the classic variety shows of television and Vine has managed to pull this format together to marvelous results. "She’s Living for This" is a fast-paced, musically entertaining and laughter-filled show.
EDGE Media Network caught up with this comical funhouse of whim and whimsy, Sherry Vine. Let’s have a chat, shall we?
20 years in the making
EDGE: I surely enjoyed your first episode!
Sherry Vine: Oh, thank you!
EDGE: It’s about time a network picked you up for your talents.
EDGE: How would you describe your sense of humor?
Sherry Vine: My sense of humor? Clown... buffoonery (laughter) Well, I grew up watching "Carol Burnett," "Laugh-In" and the variety shows, "Benny Hill" and sometimes "Monty Python"... so, and those were my biggest influences. Certainly, "The Carol Burnett Show" was my number one, "big one."
EDGE: Did you go to here!TV with this idea for the show?
Sherry Vine: Josh Rosenzweig and I have been friends for twenty-five years. He is the co-director of the show and works at here!TV. It’s always been our "dream" project, now that he’s in a position where he can make it happen. He’s the one who brought me in. It was definitely collaboration. We came up with everything together; we have spent the last year coming up with ideas and everything together.
Sherry Vine: I know, right. (laughter) It only took twenty years.
EDGE: How are the demands of the show treating you, as far as the production schedule? How often do you tape the episodes?
Sherry Vine: Well, it’s kind of broken down into three or four different days. We do all the musical numbers for one episode in one day, then a different day for all the skits and another day where we do pick-ups and segues and stuff.
EDGE: I have to tell you... I hope I’m not the only one that caught the opening credits as an ode to "Betwitched" and "The Partridge Family."
Sherry Vine: No, I’m glad you got that. A couple people have said, "Oh, there’s ’Betwitched,’ there’s ’Mary Tyler Moore’ and there is ’That Girl.’" We got as many in that as we could.
EDGE: I have to go back a bit to your video parody of Lady Gaga’s "Bad Romance." Whenever I wanted a mental break from the stress at work, that video would shake the cobwebs out of your head, because you just need to laugh.
Sherry Vine: Oh honey, I’m so glad to hear that... that was the whole idea. Everything I would ever want out of that was just that. Just for people to laugh and to forget about "not having a job or whatever" and just put that on for three minutes and just laugh. So, that’s the best compliment I could get.
EDGE: What is one of the first songs you remember putting your zany, hilarious lyrical spin on?
Sherry Vine: Oh, I use to do that in high school! I was a musical theatre queen in high school. We would sit around and change all the words to "South Pacific" and everything and just be silly. When I first started performing in drag, the first one that I really did, that formed "Sherry" was a parody of "Linger" by The Cranberries.
EDGE: That’s cool. Now, on your show, I really like the character of "Super Nanny" Sullivan. Is she going to be a recurring character?
Sherry Vine: (laughter) No, I think that’s going to be a one-time thing because Justin Bond was the special guest on the first show.
EDGE: He did a great job and I remember him from Kiki and Herb. He was an amazing first guest.
Sherry Vine: Yeah, I was really lucky that she was in town and available. I have known Justine since she moved to New York, so almost twenty years.
EDGE: Can you tell me who you have planned for upcoming shows and your dream list of guests?
Sherry Vine: So far, it’s been my dream list. The second show is with Queen Lady Peppermint. She’s one of the top queens in NYC and everyone loves her. She’s got this gorgeous song that she wrote. The third show, we have the legendary Joey Arias. Later on Candis Cayne is coming in from L.A. to be one of our guests.
EDGE: Nice What was it like watching the first show when it premiered on here!TV?
Sherry Vine: There was a big viewing party in New York the night before and I was terrified! But, the actual premiere on here!... I’m doing a show in Florida, so I’ll be working. Hopefully, people will laugh and like it... I hope! I think there’s nothing like it right now and people will be ready for it.
EDGE: It’s been great fun and I’ll continue watching.
Sherry Vine: That’s great. Thank you so much. I’m glad you liked it.
You can catch Sherry Vine in "She’s Living for This" airs on here!TV and at here! Online every other Friday night.
