Dear Phyllis,

My granddaughter is pregnant. Her friends made a baby shower for her. Many of her friends are pregnant too. I could not believe what they were talking about at the baby shower. One woman said, "I wonder if my baby will be a lawyer when she grows up." Another said, "Whose baby do you think will be a teacher when he grows up?" I heard my granddaughter say, "I wonder which one of us will have a gay or lesbian child." I was shocked! She spoke about homosexuality like it was so natural and her friends took it in stride. I am afraid my granddaughter may make my great grandchild become gay. What can I do?

-Grandma Bea

Dear Grandma Bea,

Years ago people thought homosexuality was a mental disorder. They tried to "cure" people who were gay. Now it is recognized homosexuality is a normal and natural occurrence. People are born with their sexual orientation. You cannot make someone gay.

In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association decided to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. In 1975 the American Psychological Association adopted a resolution stating homosexuality per se implies no impairment in judgment, stability, reliability, or general social or vocational capabilities. (American Psychologist, December 2000).

There are still people today who believe homosexuality is a choice and they can and should try to change a person’s sexual orientation. Unfortunately these misguided people cause great harm to those they try to change. The healthy attitude and understanding of your granddaughter and her friends will be an asset in the child rearing of their children. Your soon to be great-grandchild is fortunate to have an understanding mommy.

May this new child bring lots of joy to you and your family.

Best,
Phyllis
